An earthquake with a magnitude of 8,9 hit the Aceh province of Indonesia today, being followed by a Tsunami warning.
The earthquake was followed by a Tsunami warning in the Indian Ocean region.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning center announced that they don’t know if a tsunami was created yet but authorities should take precaution measures.
This region is regularly affected by earthquakes. A tsunami that took place in December 26, 2004, in the Indian Ocean, after a 9.3 magnitude earthquake that hit the Sumatra Island, killed 170,000 people and, in total, 230,000 people died from the 13 nations around the Indian Ocean.
A witness quoted by Reuters said that the earthquake was felt in Singapore, Thailand and South of India.
The USGS announced that today’s earthquake happened at a depth of 33 km below sea level, at approximately 495 km from the capital of the province, Banda Aceh. ” Earthquakes with such a high magnitude have the potential of generating a destructive tsunami that can affect the coast regions of the entire Indian Ocean” USGS said.
UPDATE:The Tsunami warning has been canceled
