The Golden Globe Awards, which rewards, on Sunday, for the 69th time in History, the elite of the world cinema, has a rich history but also it also has it share of negative critics from nominees.
The Nominees are Voted by Journalists from 55 countries
The Hollywood Foreign Press Associated was founded in 1942 and it contained 8 journalists. Today, the members of the association are journalists from 55 countries in Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America and their publications are read by more than 250 million readers. Each year five new journalists are added to the Association.
Each year, the members of the association view more than 300 movies and attend film festivals to discover new and innovating movies.
24 carat gold trophies
The first ceremony took place in 1944. The movie, who won in five categories, ” The Song of Bernadette” received diplomas.
The Golden Globe concept appeared in 1946, at the initiative of Marina Cisternas, the president of the association at that time, who came with the idea of the current globe award.
The Golden Globe trophies are plated with 24 carat gold and they are 25,4 cm tall. At a production cost of 250 dollars for each trophies, the globes are created one every three years and the names of the winners are engraved after they are announced.
Initially, the awards were handed down by journalists, however starting with 1958, when famous artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr went on stage, the tradition of celebrities handing down awards was established. Also that year the ceremony was televised for the first time, only locally at first, in Los Angeles, California, and starting with 1963 in many areas in the U.S. and then all over the world.
Meryl Streep Won The most Golden Globe Awards
The most individual Golden Globe awards, 7, went to actress Maryl Streep, followed by Jack Nicholson, with six awards. Five awards were also won by Francis Ford Coppola, Shirley MacLaine, Rosalind Russell and Oliver Stone. Also, five awards were won by movies like Doctor Zhivago, Love Story, The Godfather, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and A Star Is Born.
The youngest actor to win the Golden Globe was Ricky Schroeder in 1980. The won the award when he was 9 years old for his role in “The Champ”.
The oldest actors to win the Golden Globe Awards were Henry Fonda, in 1982, and Jessica Tandy, in 1990.
The nominees who refused the Golden Globe award were the producers of the “Z” movie, in 1970, who decided not to accept the award, and Marlon Brando, in 1973, who refused the award to protest against imperialism and racism. Marlon Brando refused the Oscar award the same year.
Last year, the big winner of the Golden Globe Awards was ” The Social Network” the movie inspired by Facebook, who received 4 awards.
2008 – The only year without the Golden Globe Awards
Four years ago, because of the Hollywood writers strike, the Golden Globe AWards were not awarded during a ceremony in Los Angeles. The producers held a press conference, for the first time in history, during which they announced the winners.
During last year’s ceremony, Gervais mocked many Hollywood stars including Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr because of their drinking and drugs problems. His remarks were received with laughter by some of the audience while others became irritated.
